Ukrainian team named Best Eastern Europe Team at the 6th Frankfurt Investment Arbitration Moot Competition

The Ukrainian team of the Institute of International Relations of Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University has been awarded the prize for the Best Team from the Eastern European Regional Group at the 6th Frankfurt Investment Arbitration Moot Competition. AstapovLawyers International Law Group acted as an official sponsor of the moot court, which took place in Frankfurt, Germany on 18-22 March 2013.

The Ukrainian team comprised of Master’s degree student of 1th year Polina Gryganska, student of 4th year Iryna Karpliuk and students of 3rd year Oleksii Maslov and Oksana Varakina (international law department). The team resolved a complicated investment dispute reaching back to the issue of fur seal hunting near the Pribilof Islands. The specialty of the moot court was that the facts and events of the case took place in the 19th century but the law and regulation is of 21st century. The competitors were students from all over the world, including University of Otago (New Zealand), Norman Manley Law School (Jamaica), Kathmandu School of Law (Nepal), Lagos State University (Nigeria), Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam (Vietnam).

Through the Frankfurt Investment Arbitration Moot Competition, law students could attain a practical understanding of the issues of a new field of international law that defines obligations between “host States” and foreign investors and refers to internationalized procedures for resolving related disputes. At the same time, the case and the hearings offered a special forum for current academics and practitioners from around the world to discuss recent developments in these fields.
